For my senior project in college, I painted on three surfboards: two eight foot and one nine foot four-inch longboard. This personified who I am and my lifestyle as a surfer. I also did two other pieces that represented an ocean scape. I pour my paint and tilt the canvas using gravity to move the paint around the canvas. Continuing this process, I will further explore different developments of my style.
I use acrylics. I believe that working with acrylics is perfect for my artistic process to represent the flow and motion of the ocean.
I enjoy surfing in my spare time and many of my pieces are directly influenced by water and nature. I love recreating the feeling of water and the sea in my work. I am inspired by Jackson Pollock with his ability to capture motion within his splatter paintings, even when they were dry. The process that I use is similar to his where I also use motion to manipulate the paint.
Getting the courage to transform my basement into my studio was a long process. Not only did I have to find the motivation to do it I had to find the time in my busy schedule. I finally started devoting time to working on it everyday after work at the beginning of summer 2019. I feel so accomplished that I was able to complete it and now have a space to create works of art through my inspiration. Having my own space to where I am able to be in my artistic element has allowed me to continue to expand my portfolio. It has also allowed me to explore each pathways of artistic capability.
